Patch Illustrations & Company Offsite Booklet
CHALLENGE
Marine Layer needed a set of original patch illustrations for a Hawaii store's Patch Bar experience and a multi-page booklet for a company offsite. The brief called for deliverables that conveyed Marine Layer's upscale, costal vibe.
PROCESS
For the booklet, I designed a San Diego offsite guide built to feel like a travel scrapbook with layered photography, handwritten marginalia, and voiced captions carrying personality into functional information like the schedule and speaker bios. The typographic system pulled from Marine Layer's existing brand fonts, with a script typeface used sparingly for mood-setting captions, and a 4-column grid held the layout together while leaving room to break it where it added visual interest.
For the patches, I designed three distinct pieces that read as a set while each taking a different approach: a type-based patch built around a custom script with a wave-like swoop in the "A," a plumeria illustration with a scalloped die-cut edge for something more decorative and collectible, and a shave ice cone that pulled Marine Layer's brand colors into the design for a playful, recognizable Hawaii moment.
