Description
Magnolia is a display typeface that toes the line between elegant and eccentric. It is a revival of De Vinne Compressed originally designed in 1892 by Gustav Schroeder and Nicholas J. Werner through the Central Type Foundry (CTF) based in St. Louis. Magnolia’s intended usage is for “save the date” invitations for events ranging from semi-formal proms, weddings, galas, and parties that convey sense of formality, celebration, and warmth. The ideal range for Magnolia to be typeset in is between 16-48pt, but its optimal range is 21-35pt.
Throughout the design process, I simultaneously gained a deeper understanding of the significance of type in shaping culture and visual communication and honed my ability to recognize the nuances of weight, spacing, and balance. Working in progressive stages helped me identify patterns and similarities across letterforms that I previously thought were distinct and unique from one another. I am so grateful for the guidance of my instructor, Ben Kiel, who introduced me to the world of type design!
